Richland County Coroner Gary Watts identified a man struck by an Amtrak train around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday as 34-year-old William T. Boulware of Gaston.

Boulware, for reasons unknown, drove his Chevrolet Tahoe off the road and onto the railroad tracks and became stuck. He was standing outside his vehicle when the northbound train approached and was running away from the train when he was struck, Watts said.

Boulware was dead when first responders arrived, Sgt. Brittany Scott of the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said.

The accident occurred near Rabon and Two Notch roads in northern Richland County.

The Amtrak train, which originated in Florida, was bound for North Carolina.
