Police investigate possible homicide of elderly woman at Myrtle Beach Mall

Horry County police are investigating a shooting at Myrtle Beach Mall that left one woman dead.

Officers responded to the mall about 12:30 p.m. Friday in response to a shooting, according to Lt. Raul Denis with Horry County police.

The victim's daughter called police after she returned to her car - parked in front of JC Penny - and found her mother injured and "slumped over" in the car, Denis said. The initial call was for a shooting, though police cannot confirm there was a shooting, Denis said.

"We're waiting for the coroner to release his results before determining if it was a shooting," Denis said.

The woman was transported to the hospital where she died, police said.

Police are treating the incident as a homicide for now "to make sure we don't miss anything, but we're not sure if it's a homicide," Denis said.

Denis said there was some blood in the car, but "people bleed for a variety of reasons."

The mall is open and shoppers are not in danger, Denis said.

"We don't have any reason to think anyone is in danger here at the mall," he said. "We believe this was an isolated incident."

The identity of the victim will be released later. Check back for more updates to this story.
