SLED investigating fatal officer-involved shooting in Dillon County

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division officials are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting after a man was killed during a confrontation with a Dillon County sheriff’s deputy.

Little else about the circumstances surrounding the shooting were released, but SLED spokesman Thom Berry said the shooting is the fifth officer-involved shooting in 2016. This is the first investigation involving the Dillon County Sheriff’s Department

SLED will investigate officer-involved shooting investigations at the request of the department involved, Berry said. Investigators will conduct interviews with responding officers and others and gather forensic evidence.

Berry said there is no known video of the incident.

In 2015, Berry said there were 48 officer-involved shooting incidents in the state, none of which involved the Dillon County Sheriff’s Department.
