A 20-year-old building that once housed Carlos’ n Charlie’s at Broadway at the Beach may be coming down to make way for a new two-story structure that will house a Paula Deen restaurant.

The city of Myrtle Beach received a building permit application Monday to demolish the current one-story restaurant for the construction of a 21,000-square-foot two-story restaurant with retail space.

Design renderings for the new structure at 1202 Celebrity Circle show a Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen and retail store with glass entryways next to Crabby Jack’s General Store along the Charleston Boardwalk. The project is valued at $3.9 million and comes six months after The Paula Deen Store opened near Pavilion Park Central at Broadway at the Beach on July 13.

Plans for the new restaurant are set to go before the Myrtle Beach Community Appearance Board for consideration Feb. 4.

Carlos’ n Charlie’s, a popular Mexican restaurant-by-day and club hotspot-by-night, closed Oct. 31 after five years at Broadway at the Beach.

The restaurant’s departure was another change in a wave of recent closures and relocations – many among businesses with nightlife activity at Broadway at the Beach. Planet Hollywood shut its doors in September after 19 years in the globe-shaped building off 29th Avenue North. MagiQuest was next to go, followed by Carlos’ n Charlie’s on Halloween and Revolutions Nightclub in November. Broadway Louie’s moved into the former home of Country Roads and Rodeo a few doors down.

And Hard Rock Café submitted plans to leave its iconic pyramid for a new renovated location where Broadway Louie’s was housed. The former Phillips Seafood restaurant on 21st Avenue North was demolished last month.

The activities have spurred some to question the popular tourist destination’s changing footprint.

Burroughs & Chapin Company, Inc., which owns Broadway, has been mum on all the changes.

"Burroughs & Chapin Company, Inc. does not comment on contractual matters with its tenants," said Lei Gainer, spokeswoman for the company.
