Columbia hosts Black History Month events on Feb. 15

The capital city is holding a Black History Month event next week at Greenview Park.

The free events on Feb. 15 in Columbia include exhibitions, poetry readings and live entertainment.

A city councilwoman and a local radio personality will speak during a presentation that will have a $5 admission fee and will require registration in advance.

Radio personality Cynthia Hardy is to make her remarks starting at 10:45 a.m. that Monday, followed by a speech by Councilwoman Tameika Isaac Devine that begins at 11:15 a.m. Devine is the first African-American woman elected citywide to Columbia City Council.

Anyone wishing to hear their remarks should register in advance so that organizers know how much lunch to order, which is covered by the $5 admission fee, a city spokeswoman said. Registration may be made at any of the 14 city recreation centers or at the parks department headquarters at Earlewood Park, 1111 Parkside Drive.

The exhibitors include a local radio station, Palmetto Health hospital, the Social Security Administration and AARP.

Greenview Park is located at 6700 David St. in the Greenview neighborhood off Farrow Road.

For more information, call the parks department at (803) 545-3100.
