Cold blasts to affect the Midlands this week and weekend

Cold, windy winter weather is descending on South Carolina.

The National Weather Service said cold Canadian air was moving into the region Tuesday and Wednesday with freezing temperatures all the way to the South Carolina beaches by Wednesday night.

Light snow was reported over western areas of the Midlands late Tuesday afternoon. The weather service office in Columbia raised the chance of snow to 20 percent for Tuesday night but was quick to add that no accumulation or impact on activities were expected.

Brisk winds of upward to 30 mph will mean wind chills in the teens and below for most areas by Wednesday night.

Thursday will bring a high of 47 degrees and a frigid low of 28 Thursday night for the Columbia area. Friday’s low is forecast to be 32.

The weekend will bring another blast of arctic air with what’s expected to be the coldest temperatures of the winter.
