Road change planned for neighbors of Lexington Medical Center
Lexington Medical Center officials are looking at widening West Hospital Drive at U.S. 378 to ease congestion for nearby residents.
Adding new turn lanes is part of the hospital’s expansion plan for its medical complex near West Columbia, spokeswoman Jennifer Wilson said Tuesday. If the plan is finalized, motorists will have two turn lanes in each direction instead of one off West Hospital at the intersection.
The road is the main route to and from neighborhoods and apartments behind the hospital.
It sounds like a workable plan, said Marcus Link, president of the homeowners association in Lexington Commons.
Hospital officials looked at extending Hulon Lane to other roads but decided widening the intersection is better, Wilson said.
Plans call for work on the $400 million hospital expansion to start this spring and be finished by fall 2018.
It includes an eight-story building with 550,000 square feet. It would be the third tower in the complex at I-26 and U.S. 378.
The new facility will include operating rooms, clinics, maternity wards and surgical recovery areas.
