Richland facilities projects progressing toward completion this year
Richland County is moving forward with two big facilities projects – and could on a third as well if County Council grants the funding this spring.
Work on the $31 million Decker Center, along the county’s International Corridor at the former Decker Mall Shopping Center, is scheduled to be completed by November.
The building will house the Richland County Central Court, which is moving from Huger Street; a Sheriff’s Department substation; and a community meeting room for neighborhood events.
Elsewhere, the Richland County Coroner’s office is preparing to move as completion nears on a 19,000-square-foot facility on Shakespeare Road. Currently sharing a 5,000-square-foot space with the Sheriff’s Department on Pineview Drive and using storage space at various county buildings, the coroner’s office will have all its materials and staff under one roof by mid-March.
Pinewood Lake Park on Old Garners Ferry Road in Lower Richland also could be getting improvements, including a fishing dock, event center and amphitheater. The additions to the park, which opened in May 2015, depend on a $4.5 million budget amendment to be considered by County Council in March.
