Kershaw County deputies charged a Lugoff-Elgin High School student Tuesday after he allegedly posted messages to social media threatening to shoot his teacher, officials said.

Sheriff Jim Matthews said 18-year-old Cameron Mose Oreglia, of Lugoff, was charged with threatening the life of a public official, teacher or principal after deputies located him at his Charm Hill Road home.

Matthews said a parent who monitors their child’s social media account alerted authorities after discovering a message sent by Oreglia in which he threatened the life of one of his teachers. The information was then passed on to high school officials and the school’s resource officer.

Deputies were dispatched to the high school and to Lugoff Elgin Middle School, but they were unable to locate Oreglia at the school, Matthews said. Deputies later found Oreglia near his residence and took him into custody.

“In today’s climate where school shooting have become far too common, law enforcement can take no chances when a threat of this type is made,” Matthews said.

Oreglia was transported to the Kershaw County Detention Center where he is awaiting a bond hearing, Matthews said.

Oreglia has no prior criminal history.
