Richland County deputies seek clues in gun fight near Publix supermarket

Investigators are baffled by an outburst of gunfire in a supermarket parking lot Saturday in Northeast Richland County that left a shopper wounded.

An unidentified woman was “caught between gunfire of an unknown amount of suspects,” Richland County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Sgt. Brittany Scott said.

The woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries after being shot in the upper body, Scott said.

The shooting took place about 9 p.m. Saturday at a shopping center in the 4600 block of Hardscrabble Road, home to a Publix supermarket and other stores.

Investigators say they have few clues in the shooting.

Deputies was unable to say Monday how many people were shooting and what the motive for gunfire might have been. Officials also were unable to give descriptions of vehicles driven by the suspects.

“Investigators are still working to identify suspects,” Scott said.
