Richland County deputies have charged a suspect in the shooting death of a man who was discovered suffering from several gunshot wounds in a crashed vehicle Monday evening.

Sheriff Leon Lott said 17-year-old Jose Reyes was taken into custody by deputies at his home in the 7400 block of High View Drive, a few blocks from the Columbia Place mall, early Tuesday morning and charged with murder.

Lott said on Monday at approximately 8:30 p.m., Reyes allegedly shot and killed a victim after an attempted armed robbery in the 400 block of Seton Hall Drive, off Parliament Drive. Deputies were responded to the scene an hour after receiving a call of shots fired in the area.

When deputies arrived, Lott said they discovered the victim in a crashed vehicle suffering from several gunshot wounds to the upper body. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Lott said Reyes was transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, where he will remain pending a bond hearing.
