Driver in serious condition after fleeing from Columbia police, crashing vehicle

One person is in serious condition after they crashed their vehicle near Caroline Road while allegedly fleeing from a Columbia police officer Friday morning.

Columbia police officials said an officer was checking on a parked vehicle at the Garners Ferry Road Walmart, which is when the driver of the vehicle fled the parking lot. In doing so, the driver hit the officer’s patrol car and another car before exiting the parking lot.

Officials said the driver then hit a tree on Caroline Road, which runs parallel to Leesburg Road between Greenlawn and Patricia drives, and their vehicle overturned.

The driver is said to be in serious condition and is receiving medical treatment for their wounds, officials said.

Officials have not yet released any further information regarding the incident, but The State will update this article as more becomes available.
