UPDATE: One person killed in single-vehicle crash in Richland County
A single-vehicle crash left one person dead Sunday morning, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.
The wreck happened at about 4 a.m. at Steeple Ridge and Kennerly roads in Irmo, not far from River Springs Elementary School, the patrol said.
Deangelo Javion Vaquar Lewis, 24, died at the scene when his vehicle left the road and struck a tree, said Richland County Coroner Gary Watts, adding Lewis lived on Kennerly Road.
A 2011 Chevrolet Camaro was traveling east on Coogler Road toward Kennerly Road and allegedly didn’t stop at the intersection’s stop sign, the S.C. Highway Patrol said, adding the vehicle went off the road and struck a tree, killing Lewis – a passenger who wasn’t wearing a seat belt.
The driver, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to a local hospital, the patrol said. The driver’s condition wasn’t known Sunday.
The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
