Driver killed when vehicle hit by truck speeding from deputy

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (AP) – A Ladson man has died after his vehicle was hit by a truck speeding from a Charleston County sheriff’s deputy.

South Carolina Highway Patrol Cpl. Sonny Collins tells local media that the chase began about 6 p.m. Saturday when a deputy saw a truck ram another vehicle and speed off.

The deputy pursued the truck though Summerville and during the chase, the truck struck two other vehicles. The driver of one them, 59-year-old Donald Ray Echols, was killed while a passenger in the vehicle was injured.

Authorities have charged 34-year-old Ronald Andrews of Cottageville with driving under the influence resulting in death, failure to stop for police and driving with a suspended license.

It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.
