A man has been charged with assaulting a deputy who tried to arrest him in connection with an alleged shoplifting incident at a convenience store on Two Notch Road.

Marvinyo White, 43, was charged with shoplifting and assaulting an officer while resisting arrest, according to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center website. White was also charged with assault 1st degree Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said after reviewing video of the incident.

The suspect walked out of Circle K at 8500 Two Notch Road, allegedly without paying for an alcoholic drink, then returned, according to a news release. A Richland County deputy responded to the store just before 8 p.m.

When the deputy tried to arrest White, White knocked him down, then continued to punch and kick the deputy, sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Curtis Wilson said.

With the help of a good samaritan, the deputy managed to arrest White, who was transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. During his bond hearing, White was charged with contempt of court and sentenced to 30 days, Lott said.

The deputy was treated at a local hospital, and his injuries were not life-threatening, Wilson said.
