Couple killed in motorcycle accident on Sunday

A couple was killed in a motorcycle accident in Lexington County on Sunday afternoon.

Wayne E. Whitworth, Jr., 43, and his 40-year-old wife, Kristie Ann Mason, were identified by Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher as the couple killed at the intersection of Hwy 6 and Meadowfield Road in Lexington.

Whitworth was operating a 2002 Harley Davidson, with his wife as passenger, traveling south on Meadowfield Road at approximately 1:35 p.m. when he failed to obey a stop sign at Hwy 6, according to Fisher, who added the motorcycle was struck by a Chrysler minivan that was traveling west on Hwy 6. The couple from Columbia weren’t wearing helmets when the collision occurred and were pronounced dead at the scene from the injuries they sustained in the accident, said Fisher.

The driver and passengers of the van weren’t injured, said Fisher, adding that autopsies will be performed on Monday to determine official cause of death.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol as well as the Lexington County Coroner’s Office is continuing to investigate this accident.
