Police arrested a man early Wednesday after he allegedly drove off as they tried to get him out of his vehicle, striking an officer in the process.

The officer was not seriously injured, according to the Columbia Police Department.

Cory Stephon Boyd, 28, was charged with assault on a police officer, driving under suspension-habitual offender, possession with intent to distribute crack, unlawful carrying of a weapon, felon in possession of a firearm, driving under the influence, failure to stop for blue lights, failure to stop on police command and possession of a schedule II drug.

Officers discovered a handgun and what appeared to be crack cocaine in the vehicle, the department said.

The incident started on Devine Street near Fort Jackson Boulevard when police responded to a report of a suspicious car. Officers realized the driver was not alert, and tried to get him safely out of the car, the department said. It ended on Monticello Drive.
