UPDATE: Coroner rules drowning cause of death for Lake Murray boater that went missing

The boater that was reported missing Saturday night and whose body was found Sunday morning died from drowning secondary to hypothermia, according to Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher following Monday’s autopsy.

The body of Jonathan Scott Scruggs, 26, was found near Goat Island. The Gaffney resident was wearing a life jacket when he was reported missing, and the life jacket was still on his body, Fisher said.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department will continue to investigate.
