AmeriCorps volunteers recognized for help with Richland County flood recovery

Richland County Council Chairman Torrey Rush on Tuesday thanked AmeriCorps and its volunteers for their support during the county’s recovery from historic flooding last fall.

The more than 400 AmeriCorps volunteers who parachuted into South Carolina after the Oct. 4 storm were crucial to the county’s recovery, Rush said during a news conference held at a North Beltline Boulevard home that volunteers are repairing.

AmeriCorps volunteers after the storm gutted and rebuilt homes, helped remove storm debris, coordinated local volunteers and more.

“The stakeholders, the volunteers are coming from near and far,” Rush said. “It’s exciting to be a part of this, but it’s even more exciting to see these individuals volunteer their time to help others. I think that’s what this country is all about, and definitely what this county is all about.”
