Grocery shoppers in Richland, Lexington help food drive Saturday

Shoppers at grocery stores in Lexington and Richland counties in central South Carolina can participate in a food drive to avert hunger.

The eighth “Food from the Heart” drive is scheduled for Saturday. It’s sponsored by Shandon Baptist Church and Northside Baptist Church. Volunteers offer shoppers a special bag outside the participating stores. Shoppers may return with as many items as they care to purchase.

Donated items are turned over to Harvest Hope Food Bank, where other church members will sort them.

Last year, 47 stories participated and volunteers collected more than 151,000 pounds of food.

Harvest Hope Food Bank chief Denise Holland says all items collected in the event are donated to the needy in the community.
