Boil water advisory in place for Chapin area residents

The Chapin Utilities Department has issued a boil water advisory for all City of Columbia water customers in the Chapin area today.

The City of Columbia, which provides water to Chapin, issued the advisory as a result of damage to a water main on U.S. 76., according to a news release from the Town of Chapin. A break in a 16-inch line near the intersection of Rauch Metz and Dutch Fork roads could possibly result in bacterial contamination, according to the City of Columbia

Anyone in the affected area should vigorously boil water at least one full minute prior to drinking or cooking. Residents nearby who have lost water or water pressure should also boil water prior to consumption. Any ice made from water that has not been boiled should not be used for drinking purposes.

All food processors and restaurants in the affected areas should follow the recommendations.

The water main is undergoing repairs and should be back in working order this afternoon, the release stated.

The advisory will be in place until the City of Columbia’s labs confirm a “satisfactory” water sample.

Residents with questions about the advisory can contact Lexington/Richland County Environmental Services at (803) 896-0620 or the City of Columbia Customer Care Call Center at (803) 545-3300. Restaurants and Hotels only may contact the S.C. Restaurant and Lodging Association at (803) 765-9000. Questions concerning healthcare facilities such as hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living facilities should be directed to the SC DHEC Division of Health Licensing at (803) 545-4370.
