A 12-year-old Sumter County boy dies after four-wheeler accident

A 12-year-old Sumter County boy is dead following a four-wheeler accident Sunday afternoon.

Hunter Moore, of Olanta, died of internal injuries and his death has been ruled an accident, according to Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Ken Bell, who said the boy’s identity won’t be released until the immediate family has been notified.

“There’s nothing to indicate foul play,” Bell said of the boy, who celebrated his 12th birthday on April 12. “It was nothing more than a tragic accident.”

At 3:15 p.m. Sumter County deputies responded to the scene in the 11000 block of Douglas Swamp Road to investigate the accident. The boy had been taken by personal vehicle to McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, before a Florence County EMS unit met them and transported the youth the rest of the way, Bell said.

The boy was reportedly awake and talking at the start of the trip, but lost consciousness, stopped breathing and died before arriving at the hospital, said Bell, adding attempts to revive the boy were unsuccessful.
