Army’s Fort Jackson hosts 2 days of Special Olympics events
A torch bearer Friday evening led law enforcement officers from 40 agencies across South Carolina on a 7-mile run from the South Carolina State House in Columbia to Fort Jackson for the opening ceremonies of the South Carolina Special Olympics.
A parade of the athletes, cauldron lighting and musical entertainment followed at the fort’s Solomon Center.
Fort Jackson is hosting 1,400 athletes during a weekend celebration.
On Saturday, competitions for aquatics, bocce, bowling, powerlifting and softball will be held at fort facilities. Badminton and track events are being held at Blythewood High School.
Award ceremonies will be held throughout the day at each venue after competition is completed.
Closing ceremonies and a victory dance are scheduled for the Solomon Center at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
