A fire early Sunday morning caused heavy damage to The Citadel Beach Club in Isle of Palms.
Isle of Palms Fire Chief Ann Graham said the fire department got a call about the blaze at the event venue at 3:43 a.m. When firefighters arrived, the entire building was on fire – from the ground, through multiple stories, to the roof.
The caretaker woke to a strange noise and then heard a fire alarm going off, Graham said. He and his wife, the only occupants, escaped with no injuries.
“As they were exiting the living area, glass was breaking from the fire,” Graham said.
One firefighter was taken to the hospital, treated and released.
Responders could only get fire trucks to one side of the building, due to it being on beachfront property, but still got the fire under control quickly, Graham said. The living area suffered heavy fire damage, while other parts of the building had extensive smoke and water damage.
Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.
The beach club property is on 5 acres, according to The Citadel’s web site, and is a popular event venue available to the public and school alumni.
A wedding event had been held at the club Saturday, Graham said.
Until further notice, the beach house area – including the parking lot – is closed, according to a post on The Citadel’s Facebook page.
Several local agencies, as well as the Red Cross, responded.
