The Columbia Housing Authority on Tuesday is partially opening applications for highly-sought pubic housing assistance and Section 8 vouchers.

The nonprofit organization wants applications to move elderly, low-income residents into publicly owned high-rise apartments at 1930 Marion St. and 2211 Read St. It also is offering Section 8 vouchers to subsidize rent payments at three specific private apartment complexes in north Columbia.

The Housing Authority will begin accepting online applications at www.chasc.org at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Help will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Libraries throughout Richland County will have staff trained to help with applications made using computers, according to Housing Authority planning director Nancy Stoudenmire.

The last date to apply is 5 p.m. on May 31.
