Cayce officials selected their new police chief from the ranks of city law enforcement officers.
Lt. Byron Snellgrove, a veteran of more than 25 years in law enforcement, was promoted to public safety director Friday.
Snellgrove’s leadership skills make him “the best choice” for the role, City Manager Rebecca Vance said.
City officials didn’t say how many candidates were considered to succeed Charles McNair, who retired this spring after 16 years.

Snellgrove had been a lieutenant after rejoining city police in fall 2012 following 11 years as a Lexington County deputy. He previously was a city police officer for four years.
His career includes service overseeing patrols and as a narcotics and gang investigator.
As public safety chief, he also will oversee city firefighters.
