Update: Columbia police searching for driver involved in deadly I-126 crash

Police are searching for a driver who left the scene after a two-vehicle wreck left one dead Wednesday night.

The wreck occurred on I-126 West near Greystone Boulevard at 9:40 p.m. Wednesday, according to a news release from the Columbia Police Department.

A Toyota Corolla was traveling on the road when another vehicle changed lanes and swerved into it. The Corolla then crossed lanes and struck a concrete median wall.

The second vehicle lost control, flipped over and came to rest on the grass shoulder of the road.

A passenger in that vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries. That driver did not show any signs of impairment, according to officers at the scene.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts identified the victim who died at the scene as Elizabeth Lee Miller, 48, of Irmo. Miller was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, Watts said.

A witness told law enforcement that the driver of the Corolla got out of his vehicle and left the scene on foot. The witness then called 911.

A separate three-vehicle wreck then occurred shortly after the first collision, which resulted in no serious injuries. Police described it as a “domino effect.”

Officers are searching for the driver of the 2008 gray Corolla with paper tags involved in the wreck.

Anyone with information about the unknown driver is asked to contact Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC, text “TIPSC” plus the message to CRIMES (274637) orwww.sccrimestoppers.com. Tips can be anonymous, and anyone with information leading to the arrest of a suspect can receive a reward of up to $1,000.
