UPDATE: Motorcyclist who died in Friday accident identified

A motorcycle driver died Saturday from injuries sustained in an accident Friday afternoon in Elgin.

Keon T. Boykin, 29, was identified as the motorcycle driver by Kershaw County Coroner David West, who said the Bishopville resident died from blunt-force trauma to his abdomen and suffered third-degree burns to 85 percent of his body.

Boykin’s 2002 Honda motorcycle and a Ford pickup were headed in the same direction on Whiting Way in Elgin around 3:44 p.m. Friday when the motorcycle driver tried to pass the truck as the truck was turning left into a private driveway, Matt Southern of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

The motorcycle struck the truck and then burst into flames. Boykin was airlifted to Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital. He died from his injuries at 5:28 p.m. on Saturday, Southern said.

Neither the driver nor the passenger in the Ford pickup was injured.

The accident remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
