Batesburg-Leesville woman killed in head-on collision Thursday

A 62-year-old resident of Batesburg-Leesvile was killed Thursday when her SUV car ran head-on into a tractor-trailer heading the opposite direction on Fairview Road in Pelion.

The woman was identified Thursday night by Lexington County coroner Margaret Fisher as Brenda L. Dodgens of Batesburg-Leesville.

The collision occurred around 6:15 p.m. on US 178 (Fairview Road) at Water Tank Road in Pelion, LCpl Matt Southern of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

Dodgens’ vehicle, which was headed eastbound on US 178, crossed the center line and ran into the tractor-trailer, Fisher said in a news release.

Dodgens was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured, Fisher said.

The accident continues to be investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Lexington County Coroner’s office.

An autopsy to determine cause of death is planned for Friday, the coroner said.
