SC license plates honor local Civil Rights leader

A South Carolina license plate honoring Civil Rights leader Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, a native of Mayesville, SC, was unveiled Tuesday during a ceremony in the atrium of the State House.

Bethune was an adviser to four US presidents, including President Franklin D. Roosevelt, whom she advised during the formation of his New Deal program. Her portrait hangs in the State House.

Proceeds from the sale of the license plate will go toward the construction and operation of the Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Museum and Restaurant; maintenance of the Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Nature Trail; promotion of tourism in Mayesville, Sumter County and the State of South Carolina.
