Suspect who shot victim in car near state fairgrounds fled in same car, officials report

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department reported deputies are searching for a suspect who reportedly shot a man in a vehicle then fled the scene in that vehicle.

Deputies responded to the 300 block of Virginia Street near Bluff Road just before 10 p.m. Monday and found a victim with gunshot wounds laying in the roadway, according to Lt. Curtis Wilson. The scene of the crime is in the Olympia area near the SC State Fairgrounds.

Wilson said the victim was shot in the upper body and was transported to Palmetto Health Richland hospital.

The victim’s condition is unknown at this time.

Prior to the shooting, an altercation occurred between the victim and the suspect, Wilson said.

The victim the got into a vehicle, and the suspect then reportedly fired shots that struck the victim.

The suspect then removed the victim from the vehicle and fled the scene in the vehicle.

Wilson said investigators are following up on “significant leads” at this time.
