A Prosperity man is behind bars after a victim was shot in the groin in what deputies believe could be a drug-related shooting.
A man was transported to Newberry County Memorial Hospital in a private vehicle Wednesday afternoon with a gunshot wound to the groin area, according to a news release from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office.
The driver of the vehicle told deputies the suspect also shot at him but missed.
Investigators believe the incident occurred on Winding Jolly Road in Newberry and was able to collect shell casings.
The two victims told deputies a suspect used the nickname “Kwe Low,” and deputies were able to identify him and locate a residence, the release stated.
Deputies searched Kweisi Steven Nicks’ home on Cy Schumpert Road and found several ounces of marijuana, and a shell casing in his vehicle consistent with casings from the scene, according to the release.Deputies are still investigating whether the incident in drug-related.
Deputies also reportedly recovered a four-wheeler that was reported stolen from York County.
Nicks, 20, was charged with attempted murder, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and receiving stolen goods.
Sheriff Lee Foster said the relationship his department built with the community helped deputies find a suspect.
“This is another example of how it takes properly trained officers who are invested in the community to be effective as law enforcement in the communities we serve,” Foster said.
A bond hearing for Nicks has not yet been held.
