Inmate found hanged to death in Spartanburg County jail

A 48-year-old inmate at the Spartanburg County Detention Center was found hanged to death in his cell on Friday, Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger said in an email.

Kelvin Thomas Taylor, of 140 Chick Springs Road in Taylors, was being held on a family court bench warrant, according to online jail records.

The State Law Enforcement Division and Clevenger’s office are investigating his death.

Preliminary autopsy results showed Taylor died of strangulation by hanging, Clevenger said in a statement.

Taylor was in jail in Greenville County after a car crash left him injured, but he was transferred to the Spartanburg County jail for other charges, Clevenger stated.

The investigation is ongoing.
