Thursday apartment fire displaces 10, causes $75,000 of damage

Ten people have been displaced and $75,000 worth of damage was caused following a morning apartment fire at Gable Oaks Apartments in Columbia.

Brick Lewis with the Columbia Fire Department said crews responded at 9:20 a.m. to the Colleton Street complex. At that time, fire and heavy smoke was visible from the second story.

“The Columbia Fire Department’s investigation into today’s apartment fire determined that the cause was due to improper discarding of smoking materials,” Lewis said.

Lewis said of the 10 people displaced, eight are adults and two are children. The Red Cross is assisting those residents.

Lewis said no injuries have been reported.
