Richland County Sheriff’s deputies have arrested and charged a man in connection with an accidental fatal shooting.

Michael Gregory Odom, 36, has been charged with obstruction of justice and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Odom and the victim, who were acquaintances, were walking to the store when Odom attempted to conceal his gun in his waistband around 1 a.m. September 13, Sheriff Leon Lott said.

The gun slippped through Odom’s waistband, fell to the concrete, and the weapon discharged a round into the upper body of the victim, Lott said.

The victim was taken to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital where he died as a result of his wound, Lott said.
