Upstate high school student dies in crash

An Eastside High student died after being ejected from a 2004 Ford truck at about 4:15 p.m. Sunday, authorities said.

Kaitlin Michelle Haynes, 16, was pronounced dead at the scene, said Kent Dill, Greenville County deputy coroner. Haynes, an Eastside High sophomore, was an unrestrained passenger, Dill said.

The truck went off the right side of the road, over-corrected, went off the left shoulder, struck an embankment and overturned, he said.

The driver, also a juvenile, was wearing a seatbelt, said Lance Cpl. Tony Keller of the Highway Patrol. The driver wasn’t injured, Keller said.

The accident, still under investigation, occurred six miles north of Greer on Jug Factory Road, he said.
