2 Cayce police officers and a suspect were shot early Saturday, incident captured on video

Two police officers and a suspect were shot early Saturday morning after a traffic stop in Cayce.

SLED was gathering and examining evidence, including a video of the incident, spokesman Thom Barry said in a news release Saturday afternoon.

Around 12:35 a.m., officers with the Cayce Department of Public Safety pulled over a vehicle for speeding as it was traveling over the Blossom Street bridge into Columbia, department spokeswoman Ashley Hunter said.

The car stopped near Williams Street, near the University of South Carolina baseball stadium. Then, as officers approached the car, it suddenly accelerated, Hunter said.

After the officers caught back up with the vehicle, the driver fled the scene on foot, Hunter said. As a chase ensued, the suspect fired multiple times at the officers with a handgun, Hunter said. Both officers were hit and returned fire.

The suspect also was hit and taken into custody, Hunter said.

Both officers and the suspect were taken to a hospital and treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.

Columbia, Richland County and USC police officers assisted during the incident.
