Two men arrested and charged with attempted burglary in Sumter

Two men have been arrested following two attempted break-ins at a Sumter home Thursday night, officials say.

Cruise Deandrea Anderson, 27, of Sumter and Michael Andrew Humphries, 35, of Wedgefield, were taken into custody late Thursday, Sumter County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Braden Bunch said in a statement released Friday.

The two men were charged with attempted burglary after a deputy on patrol returned to the scene of an earlier attempt at a home in 4700 block of Cane Savannah Road in the Wedgefield neighborhood around 9:30 p.m. Thursday. During that attempt, two men in a white truck were spotted attempting to break-in to the home and a resident at the address also reported hearing a gunshot.

The deputy responding to the initial call returned to the home and found Anderson banging on the front door, while another man, later identified as Humphries, was found sitting in the driver’s seat of a white truck parked nearby. Anderson fled the scene and the deputy heard a gunshot.

Anderson, who was later found with a gunshot wound in his leg at a nearby home, accused law enforcement of shooting him. After a brief investigation, supervisors found the responding deputy’s weapon had not been fired and that all of the deputy’s issued rounds were accounted for.

In addition, a handgun, recently fired with an empty casing still lodged in the chamber, was found at the Cane Savannah Road home. The gun was determined to be the same reported stolen two years earlier. Gunshot residue tests were conducted on both the responding officer and the suspect. Those have been sent to SLED for analysis.

Anderson was taken to an area hospital for treatment. The nature of the injury was found to be consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Bunch said. After treatment, Anderson was released from the hospital. He and Humphries were taken to the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center.

The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate.
