Organizers of a Richland County summit next week hope to improve relations between students, educators and law enforcement, and say space is still available for participants.

South Carolina educators, students, nonprofits and law enforcement agencies are joining forces for the “Moving Forward Together Summit,” a two-day event geared toward strengthening relationships between educators, students – especially those in the African American and Hispanic communities – and law enforcement.

The featured speaker will be Garry McFadden, a 34-year veteran and detective of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

The event will be Monday and Tuesday at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, and will provide communities with the tools to create a culture of respect between schools, neighborhoods and law enforcement, organizers say. Faith-based leaders, residents, students, educators, government leaders and anyone interested in strengthening their schools or neighborhoods are encouraged to attend.
