SC man driving 141 mph spends night in Kershaw County Detention Center
A South Carolina man was arrested for driving 141 mph on Sept. 22, according to the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office.
Liam Chou Buckley, 20, of Myrtle Beach, was arrested just before midnight last Friday, after a Kershaw County deputy clocked him driving 141 mph on I-20 eastbound, near the 87 mile marker.
Buckley was driving his 2005 Corvette more than twice the posted speed limit of 70 mph, according to Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews, adding that Buckley told the deputy he was driving to Myrtle Beach to see his girlfriend.
Buckley was given a traffic citation for speeding more than 25 mph above the speed limit and taken to the Kershaw County Detention Center, where he spent the night before being released on his own recognizance, Matthews said.
If convicted, Buckley faces a maximum fine of $440 and 6 points on his license.
“It should be pretty common knowledge now that we patrol I-20 pretty heavily due to our high fatality rate there and the shortage of State Troopers in our county,” Matthews said in a statement, adding four people have died so far this year in traffic accidents on I-20 between the White Pond Rd. exit and the Lugoff exit in Kershaw County. “Speeds in excess of 100 mph are pretty common and one would think that with this increased enforcement people would slow down a little.”
