A 17-year-old Newberry High School student was arrested Thursday after officials say he brought a gun to school.

Quinderaus Lindler will be charged with carrying a weapon on school property, a crime that carries a penalty of up to five years in prison and/or a $1,000 fine, if convicted.

A 9 mm pistol was found in the student’s backpack but was not openly displayed, and no threats were made to anyone, according to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Department.

The weapon was found as part of an unrelated investigation, the sheriff’s department said.

There were bullets in the clip, but no round was in the chamber, the sheriff’s department said.

Officials are investigating why and how the gun was brought to school but do not believe there was a specific threat to staff or students.
