Crash wasn’t what killed Columbia man in single-vehicle collision

A Columbia man who died in a single-vehicle collision Wednesday morning wasn’t killed by the crash.

James Ondra Tyron Outen, 58, died from a cardiac event unrelated to the incident, according to Richland County Coroner Gary Watts who performed an autopsy.

The incident occurred between 6-6:45 a.m. in the 1000 block of Winterwood Road in Columbia, near Outen’s residence, Watts said.

Outen was the restrained driver of a vehicle that left the road and veered into a ditch and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Watts.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
