Columbia husband, wife charged with stealing thousands from SC government
A Columbia couple was arrested Tuesday for their involvement in stealing money from the South Carolina Department of Social Services.
Tiffany Denna Cato Jackson, 35, and her husband Willie Campbell III, 39, of Columbia were each charged with criminal conspiracy, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
Jackson worked at S.C. DSS as a fiscal technician from June 2016 to Feb. 2017, and during that time it’s alleged that she created a fake account, from which she created a check in the amount of $1,522.15 payable to Campbell which was deposited in his bank account, according to an arrest warrant.
The maximum penalty for the criminal conspiracy charge is 5 years in prison or a $5,000 fine.
Jackson was also charged with embezzlement of public funds value less than $2,000, a felony with a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison and a fine at the discretion of the court, according to SLED.
Campbell was also charged with receiving stolen goods, value $2,000 or less, a misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of a $1,000 fine or 30 days in prison, according to SLED.
Jackson and Campbell were booked at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
SLED investigated the case at the request of the S.C. Department of Social Services.
