Trooper cleared in shooting of man on I-20 in Columbia in February
A South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper has been cleared of wrongdoing in the shooting of a man who pulled a gun on him during a nighttime traffic stop on Interstate 20 in Columbia.
WIS-TV reports that local prosecutors cleared Lance Cpl. Jason Snider earlier this month after a South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigation.
Investigators said the trooper on Feb. 21 pulled over Chance Noah Etheredge, 36, on Interstate 20 at Interstate 26 after his car drifted out of its lane.
Troopers say Etheredge failed roadside sobriety tests, and the officer was preparing to arrest him when Etheredge ran to his car and got a gun. Authorities say the trooper fired his gun. Etheredge was wounded and charged with assault and battery and resisting arrest.
The Department of Public Safety is still conducting an internal investigation.
