21-year-old Midlands driver charged after passenger killed in single-vehicle crash
A 21-year-old South Carolina driver has been arrested and charged after a single-vehicle collision killed one of his passengers early Sunday morning.
Austin D. Hubbard, of Barnwell, has been charged with felony DUI resulting in death, according to Lance Cpl. Matt Southern of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The incident occurred after 2 a.m. on Harris Road, near the intersection with Joie Zorn Boulevard, Southern reported.
Hubbard was driving southbound on Harris Road, when he ran off the left side of the road and struck an embankment, Southern said. The vehicle overturned and the front-seat passenger was ejected.
Neither the front-seat passenger nor Hubbard or any of the three passengers in the back seat of the vehicle were wearing seat belts, according to Southern, who said no other injuries were reported.
Hubbard was taken to Barnwell County Detention Center.
The incident remains under investigation by the S.C. Highway Patrol.
