Two heavily traveled roads in downtown Columbia were closed during the evening commute because of a police incident.

Shortly after 5 p.m., Columbia Police Department reported negotiators talked with a man at the Sumter Street parking garage, saying he threatened to harm himself.

About 30 minutes later, police reported that the incident ended peacefully and the man involved was taken to an area hospital.

Because of the incident, police closed stretches of Sumter Street, Main Street and Marion Street from Lady to Hampton streets.
