SC woman accused of embezzling tens of thousands of dollars from her county job

A South Carolina woman was arrested and charged Wednesday for embezzling tens of thousands of dollars from her job with Cherokee County.

Angela Gregg Mabry, 49, was charged with felony embezzlement of public funds, value $10,000 or more, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

Mabry worked for the Cherokee County Magistrate’s Office and her job was the safekeeping of public funds, according to SLED. She was entrusted with processing payments and receiving money on behalf of the magistrate’s office. She was also entrusted with collecting money from payments processed by other clerks and depositing the money into the bank.

An audit revealed discrepancies with the amount of money received by Mabry and the amount actually deposited into the magistrate’s office bank account, from July 1, 2016 to May 30, 2017, according to SLED.

Mabry allegedly received and fraudulently documented/processed more than $10,000 in transactions of public funds, thus depriving Cherokee County, SLED reported.

If she’s convicted, Mabry faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine at the discretion of the court in proportion to the amount of money embezzled.

Mabry was booked at Cherokee County Detention Center, and had bond set at $10,000.

SLED investigated the case at the request of the Cherokee County Magistrate’s Office.
