Victim arrested, shooting suspect charged with attempted murder

The victim of a Saturday-evening shooting was arrested after Richland County sheriff’s deputies discovered the victim had a large amount of cocaine and cash in his possession.

Sgt. Kevin Lawrence, a department spokesman, said sheriff’s deputies responded to a restaurant in the 200 block of O’Neil Court near Two Notch Road in reference to a shots-fired call.

Lawrence said when deputies arrived, several witnesses told them that a fight broke out and that several beer bottles were thrown. It is unclear if the fight began inside the restaurant.

That was when 38-year-old Damon McDuffie began firing shots at 28-year-old Evian Jeter, Lawrence said. Jeter was struck in the upper body and McDuffie fled the scene before deputies could arrive.

Lawrence said Jeter was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening wounds, but when deputies met with him, they discovered that Jeter had a large amount of cash and cocaine in his possession. Jeter was charged with possession with intent to distribute.

Shortly after investigators were notified, McDuffie was detained and charged with attempted murder in connection with the shooting, Lawrence said.
