His job was caring for the mentally ill. Now, he’s in jail for hurting them, agents say

A Columbia man was arrested after investigators say he choked a man while working at a mental heath treatment center, according to a statement from the S.C. Law Enforcement Division.

Jah-King Davon James, 29, was charged with abuse of a vulnerable adult and arrested Monday, according to his arrest warrant.

On May 21, James was working as a custody officer at Correct Care Recovery Solutions in Columbia, according to his warrant.

The company operates a regional care center in Columbia that works with the S.C. Department of Mental Health to provide mental health treatment and evaluations for people involved in court proceedings, according to CCRS’s website.

James allegedly grabbed a patient at the center by his neck and put him in a choke-hold, according to the warrant. The incident was caught on a surveillance camera.

After his arrest, James was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
