Bicyclist, 2 others killed in separate Midlands collisions

A hit-and-run that killed a bicyclist was among three deadly collisions on Midlands roadways Saturday.

Troopers first responded to a fatal crash on Haile Gold Mine Road near Buffalo Creek Road in Kershaw County just before 9 a.m., according to Lance Cpl. Matt Southern of the S.C. Highway Patrol. The driver of a Chevrolet pickup traveling north on Buffalo Creek Road ran a stop sign and was hit by another pickup that was traveling east on Haile Gold Mine Road.

The driver of the first pickup was not wearing a seat belt, and was partially ejected from the pickup as it overturned, Southern said. The driver of the second pickup was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

The fatal hit-and-run happened just before 11:40 a.m. on Hardscrabble Road near Lake Carolina Boulevard in northeast Richland County, according to Southern.

A BMW was traveling north on Hardscrabble and an unknown vehicle was in the left lane of Lake Carolina Boulevard, trying to make a left turn, Southern said. The driver of the unknown vehicle failed to yield to the BMW, the driver of which took evasive action and swerved to the right, hitting a bicyclist who was traveling west on Lake Carolina Boulevard and approaching the stop sign in the right lane.

The BMW ran off the roadway after hitting the bicyclist, Southern said. The bicyclist, who was wearing a helmet, was taken by EMS to Palmetto Health Richland and later died. The identity will be released by the Richland County Coroner’s Office.

There were no details of the third vehicle’s description except that it’s possibly silver in color, Southern said.

The third fatal collision happened in Lee County just before 10 p.m., Southern said. A Honda motorcycle was traveling south on Rembert Church Road when the driver ran a stop sign at S.C. 441.

The motorcycle spilled, ejecting the driver, who was not wearing a helmet, Southern said.

All three collisions remain under investigation by the Highway Patrol. Anyone with information on the fatal hit-and-run or the whereabouts of the third vehicle is asked to call the Highway Patrol at 1-800-768-1501 or *HP.
